REVIEW

April 2016

Last year I reviewed (and was very impressed by) the Michael Kelly 1965 electric guitar, which has established itself as part of their core assortment of electric guitars. At the 2016 Winter NAMM, Michael Kelly announced the addition of their Mod Shop line of guitars, which are distinct from the models they are modded from in that they represent a more specific, niche tone offering than their standard, any-application designs and appointments...

Bare Knuckle Pickups

With pickups hand-wound in England, these guys are serious about sound. We are proud to use their no compromises pickups in our instruments.

EPIC ELEVEN MOD

The Epic Eleven electronics hot-rod mod delivers maximum sonic versatility. With Epic Eleven you get to break away from the typical 5 tones limitation of a traditional 5-way switch wiring. The secret sauce is the added mini-toggle, which allows you to add in the neck pickup into configurations where it would not normally be available. The second way that the Epic Eleven Mod adds sonic options is with a push-pull on the Master Volume which allows you to coil tap the bridge humbucker, switching from hum to a vintage single coil tone.

Mod Shop 1965 Bare Knuckle

We wanted to step it up one more notch on our 1965 model so we challenged our friends at Bare Knuckle Pickups to find the right combination to make the dream HSS guitar. They came up with a killer combo. It starts with the humbucker in the bridge, their Blackdog model. It is aggressive and throaty, they describe is as having a deep bottom end, muscular mids and smooth highs and more output than a vintage PAF and we very much agree. The two single-coil pickups are their Slow Hand model. These are high output with a nice modern edge in their voicing for a nice driven tone.

MODERN-C - 50s SERIES

Comfort without sacrifice, that is how you might describe our 50’s series Modern-C shape. The size is what many would call medium to medium-thin and the shape is a really smooth and comfortable round shape. The thin profile makes it faster than the typical vintage neck, while the carefully contoured C-shape makes it comfortable for extended playing.
